Case Study :: Custom solution helps firm avoid court fines

  • Challenge
A big six accounting firm was facing potential penalties for failure to deliver certain documents in a pending court case. The firm needed to extract data from its twenty year old e-mail system, but had no existing means of doing so. The software company that originally wrote the system no longer supported any of the program source code; in fact, the company no longer employed any of the programmers who worked on developing that system.

Personnel within the accounting firm had spent a year working to unravel the problem of extracting the data from these files, until ILS was asked to sort the birds nest out.

  • Solution
ILS engineers wrote a custom algorithm to decrypt the electronic mailboxes on the e-mail system. Once the mail was decrypted the data was groomed for processing by the ILS EDGE Data Miner software. All of the e-mails were then output to individual Microsoft PST files for use by the customer.

  • Results
The required e-mail data was fully recovered. The data was used in subsequent hearings and the firm successfully avoided the fines threatened by the court. ILS delivered a customized solution so that this process could be replicated for future cases.
